Are You a Spiritual Person?

Years ago I worshipped.  I worshipped a god. Not the true God.  It was a god I created.  I worshipped a god I created in my own image.  I thought I was a “spiritual person”.

Many people find themselves in this place.  It is a common claim to be “spiritual.” But what does this mean?  What are they claiming?  Do they really know?  Did I really know?

When I said I was spiritual I was really just worshipping a god who did not hold my sin against me.  I wanted to worship and pray to a god that would supply me with what I wanted and not have the burden of thinking of sin.  Who wants to think of sin?  In my exploration of yoga and eastern religions I knew there was something greater than myself. I just didn’t want it to be the God of the Bible.

I thought those people who believe the Bible were crazy.  They just want you to live like them. They are always judging. I thought I could be spiritual without the Bible. I could live a life with little sins and still have a god who didn’t care and all is good.  I created a god in my image.

Many people I have conversations with tell me this same story. I often hear “I don’t need the Bible. I’m just a spiritual person.” Or I hear, “I don’t need religion or church because I’m just spiritual.” They are making a god in their image.  One that doesn’t judge.  One that doesn’t command.  One who doesn’t condemn.

It is easy to worship a god like that.  A god who is not concerned with sin and holiness is a god that people have been trying to worship since the beginning.

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.  For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:4-6

How easy was it to convince Eve that they would not surely die if they disobey God. How easy it was to convince Eve that they would be wiser if they took and ate.  They were easily convinced  to not believe God and believe that He would not punish them as He said  for eating from the tree.  They believed the lie of the serpent and took and ate not thinking of what would happen.  They believed like the serpent was right.  God was holding out and wouldn’t follow through.  They perhaps thought that they could still maintain a relationship with God, be spiritual, and disobey.

It should not be a surprise to see this continually play out over and over in those who are in Adam.  We see this in those who have not trusted in Christ.  So many people want a spiritual relationship without believing what God has said.  We take from the tree and eat. Even though our eyes are opened and we know we sin, we continue to repeat this process.  We continue to suppress the truth in our sin and unrighteousness. Yet we claim to be spiritual

That’s how it was for me.  That is until my true spiritual eyes were opened.  This is until I was born from above.  I was born again.  I then began to see the true kingdom of heaven. I began to know the Trie God and be truly spiritual.

Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Everyone has a natural inclination to worship.  Even those who don’t even claim to be spiritual worship something.  But God commands us to worship Him.

You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3

But our sin keeps us from worshipping God, the true God.  We will continue to worship gods we make in our image until our hearts are changed and our sin is dealt with.

But thanks be to God our sin has been dealt with.  We can worship the true God by coming before Him in the Son.  We must repent of our sin and trust in the Son.

This is what God did for me.  He gave me a heart to worship Him by trusting in His Son for the forgiveness of my sin.  I admitted my sins needed to be forgiven.  I was granted repentance and faith.  Now I am a spiritual person who worships the true God in spirit and truth.  If you truly want to be a spiritual person you must repent and believe in Jesus Christ.  Be born again by the Holy Spirit.

May you be a spiritual person, who worships the true God through Jesus Christ, in spirit and truth.
