Introduction
Should women box? The Olympics in France had a boxer from Algeria, Imane Khelif, fight with Angela Carini of Italy. What is the problem with this? Khelif is a man who pretends to be a woman and Carini is an actual woman. Obviously, a man should not beat up a woman. This freak show where the Babylon Bee says he won gold in domestic violence should be satire. Yet, it is not. This world rejects reality and hates God and the rest of mankind. God will not be mocked. Therefore, when one mocks reality, women get severely hurt and even die. This is why women should not compete with men in sports.
Yet, this raises the question. Should women play dangerous sports at all? Hence the title, Should Women Box?
Biblical view of Women
Image of God, Females
When asking, “Should women box?” Christians need to consult what the Bible says about women.
First, the Bible presents the woman as a biological human female created in the image of God.
- So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27, ESV).
- I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children (Genesis 3:16, ESV).
Wives
Second, The Bible says women can (and arguably should) be the helpmate for man by submitting to their husbands.
- 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18, ESV).
- 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control (1 Timothy 2:9-15, ESV).
- 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22-24, ESV).
With these principles in mind. A woman is meant to be a biological human female created in the image of God, who is meant to submit to her husband, honor God, and bear children. Exceptions do not make the rule. There are single women, barren women, etc. Yet, the rule still stands. A woman is no less a woman because of the results of the Fall.
Does the Bible Say Women Should not Box?
No. It does not. This was not a concern in the Bible.
Does this Make a Woman Any Less of a Person?
Next, the Christian must ask if this makes a woman any less of a person. No it does not.
Women are coheirs with Christ and receive the Holy Spirit just as men do.
26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise (Galatians 3:26-29, ESV).
Does Women Being the Same value as Man Mean they can Do the Same things?
Should a woman box? They can if they are the same as a man. However, women are physically, mentally, and emotionally different. They have different roles than men. They are to be the nurturers, the mothers, and those who are the homemakers. Men should love and protect women.
Peter says
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered (1 Peter 3:7, ESV).
Conclusion
Women should definitely not box men. Also, women are not to be pastors. However, women are to be mothers, wives, homemakers, and teachers of children. It would be demeaning for them to take the same roles as a man.
Should women box? Probably not. There are far better callings such as evangelism, missions, being a wife, motherhood, praying, and teaching other women to be submissive to their husbands. Yet, we live in a fallen world. It would be wise for women to learn self-defense. Judo are jujitsu are especially for women to use self-defense. Both Andrew Rappaport and Aaron M. Brewster are martial artists who believe all women should know how to protect themselves, and that training does involve sparring–the practice of self-defense.
It is even appropriate for a woman to learn how to use a gun. This would protect them from those trying to harm or violate them. Yet, outside of that. It is probably wise to stay out of those competitions.
